The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the proposals of three new LNG projects totalling US$38.75bn in investment.

NextDecade’s Rio Grande LNG, Texas LNG and Annova LNG have moved closer to being realised at the Port of Brownsville in Texas following FERC’s decision.

“The fact that the Port of Brownsville was sought out and chosen for these three LNG projects is a testament to our strategic location and Brownsville’s important role in both the energy industry and international trade,” said Eduardo A. Campirano, port director and CEO.

“FERC’s confidence in these projects, demonstrated by today’s approval is very important. The federal commission’s evaluation process ensures that the plants must operate within the design parameters for safety and environmental protection.”

Next step

The next step in the process comprises final investment decisions (FID) to be made by the applicants, which are expected as early as the first quarter of next year.

All three projects remain active in developing their potential as they await authorisation.

Last month it was announced that Abu Dhabi-based investment company Mubadala will purchase US$50m of NextDecade’s common stock.

In April it was confirmed that electric equipment is expected to be used in the Annova LNG Brownsville Project to reduce emissions and lower the overall environmental impact of the project.
