Engineering contracts for Sohar LNG project
McDermott International and JGC Corporation have been awarded contracts by Total Oman E&P Development B.V. in partnership with Oman Oil Company S.O.A.C. to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the Sohar LNG bunkering project at Sohar Port.
The project to construct a new medium-scale LNG plant with an annual LNG production capacity of 1,000,000t is intended to establish Oman as a regional LNG bunkering hub capable of supplying LNG as a fuel to marine vessels.
"This award is a reflection of McDermott's 60-year history of delivering innovative LNG solutions worldwide, beginning with our tank storage solutions in the 1950s, to our liquefaction capabilities today," said Linh Austin, McDermott’s senior vice president, Middle East and North Africa.
The scope of work during the FEED phase includes fully defining the onshore mid-scale LNG facilities and preparing a competitive tender for the engineering, procurement, supply, construction and commissioning phase. The global LNG bunkering market is entering a rapid growth period driven largely by the IMO’s legislation to significantly limit sulphur emissions.
McDermott carried out its first LNG project in 1958 and built the first LNG regasification import terminal in the US. It is currently building the Cameron LNG facility in Hackberry, Louisiana, and the Freeport LNG facility in Freeport, Texas.
JGC is responsible for constructing LNG plants accounting for approximately 30% of global LNG production. Currently, JGC is managing LNG construction projects including a large-scale LNG plant in Canada, as well as FLNG (Floating LNG) plants off the coasts of Malaysia and Mozambique.
Work on the project will begin immediately.
