New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland has joined a coalition to fight climate change in order to ramp up its efforts to tackle GHG emissions.

The Climate Leaders Coalition is a collective of over 60 Kiwi business leaders who have each committed to act on climate change.

“Climate change is the issue of our time and how we meet this challenge will define us. We can’t expect ‘The Government’ to solve the problem alone, we all have to roll our sleeves up, get stuck in and fix this,” said Tony Gibson, chief executive, Ports of Auckland.

Mr Gibson said that as part of its membership, the port authority has signed the CEO Climate Change Statement which commits businesses to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and work to reduce them.

Ports of Auckland has set a goal to be a zero emissions port by 2040.

It has been actively measuring its emissions and has become the first port in New Zealand to be CEMARS® certified.

The port authority has recently committed to set science-based emissions reductions targets through the Science Based Targets initiative - the first port in the world to make this commitment.

“It’s vital that businesses set individual goals, but by working in partnership we can achieve even more. The Climate Change Statement sets the agenda and will, I believe, result in significant change,” added Mr Gibson.

As well as a commitment to measure and reduce emissions, the CEO Climate Change Statement requests its signatories to work with suppliers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
