Largest scrubber system now on order
An Alfa Laval Aalborg-developed scrubber system for 28MW power has been ordered by Spliethoff
Alfa Laval has signed a contract with Dutch shipowning group Spliethoff to fit a multiple inlet PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning system onboard a ship operating mainly in the North European ECA.
This is the first order received by Alfa Laval for a multiple inlet scrubber system. Since the vessel’s engines have a combined rated output of 28MW, the company says that this will be the largest marine scrubbing system sold so far.
Alfa Laval regards this as a step forward in the industry’s preparations for the ECA requirements that will take effect from 2015.
The system is the first to use a single scrubber to clean the exhaust gases for the main as well as the auxiliary engines. René Diks, manager, marketing & sales, exhaust gas cleaning, Alfa Laval, said: “For the retrofit market, where space and weight are critical issues, it is essential to be able to supply a single scrubber that handles exhaust gases from all the ship’s engines. Other advantages include lower energy consumption, less piping and lower maintenance costs.”
Alfa Laval has another system in what it claims to be successful operation on the DFDS ro-ro Ficaria Seaways. This system treats the exhaust gas of a 21MW MAN main engine and is currently the largest marine scrubber in operation. To date, the system has completed more than 4,000 operating hours.
Frank Louwers, director of Spliethoff, explained that the investment in this technology ensures that Spliethoff will be well prepared to meet the upcoming o.1% sulphur limitations in European and American ECA waters.
PureSOx has a claimed sulphur removal rate of more than 98%, and is a hybrid system that can operate on either sea water or fresh water.
