Dust containment innovation
If only dust was this easy to contain everywhere
A US company is seeking to clean up dusty ports with a new suppression device designed specifically for use at conveyor discharge points.
Coal handling, mining, scrap and recycling, construction and demolition and rock and aggregate processing are typically dusty businesses - associated with health risks and air quality issues. The technology aims to do away with the need for manual spraying and aims to save on labour costs.
Mike Teach, from Dust Control Technology, said to GreenPort: "We have made DB-R sales to port operators who would choose DustBoss equipment because the technology helps reduce migrating dust and contributes to environmental stewardship."
Dust Control Technology’s (DCT) DustBoss DB-R system creates a virtual curtain around the material flow for effective particle containment. It does this via a network of atomising nozzles outfitted to a large high quality stainless steel ring, that discharges millions of 50-200 micron droplets of water per minute.
The Panama City Port Authority has adopted the system for its wood pellet loading and biomass operations and TransInvestService Ltd (TIS) at Adzhalik Bay in the Ukraine already use the technology for the cleaner transhipment of coal, grain and fertilser.
“This design was first developed for a coal application,” explained DCT CEO Edwin Peterson. “The customer was looking for a way to specifically address the material as it came off the conveyor. The solution was simple but effective, and we’re finding that it’s well suited to conveyor discharge of sand, aggregates, biomass or other traditionally dusty materials,” he said.
