A liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal will connect to the Finnish gas grid and be accessible to major harbours.

To be built at the Port of Hamina in Finland, the receiving terminal will be the first in the country to be connected to the grid, offering security of supply, while once operational in August 2020, it will enable LNG to be delivered to major harbours in Finland using trucks.

Following the announcement of Wärtsilä’s turnkey contract to supply the terminal alongside Hamina LNG Oy, Timo Mahlanen, senior business development manager at Wärtsilä Energy Solutions, said: “The project will bring a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by providing cleaner fuel for transport and industry.

“The Hamina project is part of Finland’s plans to create a network of medium scale LNG terminals with the aim of offering gas supply to the local industry and LNG for ship bunkering, and ensuring an additional source of gas for Finland.”

Long-term project

The scope includes site filling, soil refurbishment, civil works, infrastructure, regasification and gas metering, a full containment storage tank with a combined net volume of 30,000m3, BOG (boil-off gas handling) system, electrical and control system, unloading/loading system and bunkering and truck loading.

Peter van Buuren, CEO of Hamina LNG Oy, commented: “We wanted to create a terminal infrastructure which would provide bunkering for vessels as well as diversify the country’s sources of gas supply.

“Wärtsilä’s technology fits our need, and they have the best local knowledge and experience as an EPC provider in harsh weather conditions. Wärtsilä offered us full EPC capabilities as well as a unique know-how in gas processing.”
