Dredging with Gladstone

21 Mar 2011

Gladstone Ports Corporation has announced that the first $A387million stage of the $A1.3 billion Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project has been awarded to a joint venture between Van Oord and Dredging International Australia.

Strict environmental conditions had been placed in respect of dredging conditions, monitoring requirements, ecosystem research plus a range of measures to protect and enhance endangered species. The 20 year project incorporates work on existing channels and basins as well as and the creation of new facilities. The 6 million cubic tonnes of material dredged during this first stage will be placed in a reclamation area and will help create a land reserve used to service new port facilities. Reported to be the largest dredging project undertaken in Australia, the project will start in early July and will enable the port to become one of the world’s biggest LNG export hubs.
