Singapore’s plan for a more efficient maritime hub
Singapore has unveiled its plans to develop the country’s next-generation port and strengthen its international maritime centre by capitalising on emerging technologies to optimise operations.
Spearheaded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Sea Transport Industry Transformation Map (ITM) also aims to catalyse innovation and enhance the skills of the maritime workforce growing the sector’s value by S$4.5 billion and creating more than 5,000 jobs by 2025.
“It is heartening that in the evolving maritime landscape, the Singapore government is galvanising the industry to embrace emerging technologies and relook their systems and processes to achieve greater efficiencies and optimisation,” said Mr Esben Poulsson, president of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA).
Dr Lam Pin Min, Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Health, launched the Sea Transport (ITM) at the annual Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year Cocktail Reception.
Singapore is investing in new port capabilities that aim to capitalise on emerging technologies. For example, Tuas Port will harness data analytics to optimise operations such as just-in-time vessel arrivals and the Maritime Single Window for quicker more efficient port clearance.
Under the MPA-PSA Port Technology Research and Development Programme (PTRDP), MPA and PSA will jointly step up R&D and capability development in the areas of digitalisation, connected community systems and automation and robotics.
A fleet of 30 automated guided vehicles (AGVs) have been deployed in a trial with automated yard cranes and quay cranes in the Pasir Panjang Terminal and these systems will also be scaled up in the Tuas Port.
In addition, MPA has also renewed a MOU with Jurong Port to support efforts to digitalise multipurpose port operations. The Jurong Port Living Lab launched last October will provide opportunities for Jurong Port to experiment with innovative ideas and deploy leading edge technologies to enhance productivity.
