Port pact on environmental issues
The sister ports of Tacoma and Kitakyushu have signed a pact on environmental issues and disaster prevention.
Officials signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last week during the tenth Tacoma-Kitakyushu sister ports conference.
The two ports have been sister ports since 1984 and hold a conference of this type every few years. Environmental issues are key priorities for both ports.
“Over the years, our two ports have learned a tremendous amount through meetings and exchanges of this type," said Connie Bacon, president of the Port of Tacoma Commission. "This MOU sets up the framework for continued cooperation on two key areas that are very important to our respective ports and port communities”.
The Port of Tacoma’s landscape focuses intently on its carbon footprint and has invested millions of dollars in a wide range of cleanup and improvement projects in and around Commencement Bay.
The port has just announced that it has introduced a new truck replacement programme. Eligible truck owners will receive a $30,000 incentive when they scrap their pre-1994 truck and purchase a new one with a model year 2007 engine or newer.
