The Port of Los Angeles has received approval from the US Coastguard to install a new hybrid propulsion system on its 42 year old harbour vessel – which will reduce emissions and fuel usage by 95%.

Angelena II is the first craft of its kind to undergo this type of retrofit. The work needed to be done because as of September last year, the vessel’s twin 350-horsepower engines no longer met California emission requirements.

“The Angelena II is an invaluable business and public education tool, and now we can also use it to demonstrate yet another emerging technology that can reduce emissions in ports and harbours around the world,” said Port Executive Director, Geraldine Knatz.

The work retrofit is expected to cost $200,000, but the port has applied for and received around $500,000 in a US Department of Energy Efficiency grant to upgrade the vessel to cleaner technology.

The vessel plays an important part in educating officials and government personnel on port projects and for highlighting port capabilities with customers and stakeholders.

The conversion work is being completed locally and is expected to be completed this spring.
