Cleaner ships for Port of LA
The Port of LA is going even greener
The Port of Los Angeles is building on its clean air action plan success with a new global environmental ship index strategy.
Working in conjunction with the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH), the Port of LA is developing new strategies for the Environmental Ship Index (ESI) programme due to be set in place in 2012.
Key strategies for the port will include rewarding operators whose vessels exceed current environmental performance standards and regulations.
The ESI targets primary pollutants including nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and diesel particulate matter. It was developed by some of the world’s major parts collaborating under the World Ports Climate Initiative – an IAPH initiative.
This news marks the fifth anniversary of the Port’s adoption of the Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP) – a landmark pollution reduction initiative which has helped to cut harmful air emissions at the port by as much as 76%.
Port of Los Angeles executive director and IAPH president Geraldine Knatz said: “The Port of Los Angeles is looking forward to being part of these international standards and setting the stage for North American ports to follow suit and reward operators for greening their fleets.”
She added: “As participation grows, the benefits increase for carriers and communities."
