Two battery powered ferries delivered to Norway just a week apart from each other indicates that demand for alternative powered vessels is continuing to increase.

The Tersan Shipyard built ro-ro passenger and vehicle ferries Eidsfjord and Gloppefjord will operate the Anda-Lote route in Nordfjord on the west coast of Norway for Fjord1.

“We are so proud to deliver these fully battery-operated ferries and honoured to be part of the first ferry connection in Norway where the road administration requires use of zero-emission technology,” said Mehmet Gazioglu, managing director, Tersan Shipyard.

Fast charging

Among the ferries unique selling points is that they will only need to stop for nine minutes for battery charging in ports.

Battery charging is completed via fully automatic charging stations at the quayside. The ferries are equipped with  a vacuum docking device  to ensure correct docking at all times with no need to run the engines and propellers at slow speeds.

Each ferry has two 500 eKW Scania DI16 90M generators for back-up and emergency operators, which were used during the ships’ maiden voyage from the shipyard.

They are also equipped with two pcs of feathering type Azipull propellers supplied by Rolls Royce.

Eidsfjord and Gloppefjord are both equipped with an auto-crossing system which helps to ensure that the vessel makes the most efficient crossing each time.

The system selects the most economically desirable speed by taking into consideration wind, load and waves. Deceleration is performed automatically.
