CalMac Ferries Limited are the UK's largest ferry operator by routes and vessels deployed; we operate 32 vessels delivering lifeline ferry services to 22 of the islands off the West Coast of Scotland, including the Outer Hebrides and the Isles of Skye, Mull and Islay.

CalMac Ferries is also the delegated statutory harbour authority operating 24 harbours and slipways on behalf of the statutory harbour authority.

The purpose of the role will be to manage waste management for the company and to develop, implement and monitor a waste management strategy to achieve socially and environmentally responsible waste management practices that achieve legal compliance and financial savings applicable to both vessel and shore based activities.

Principal accountabilities:-

Contract Management 

* Ensure that existing contracts are fit-for-purpose and deliver, as a minimum, legal compliance
* Investigate alternative waste management contractors, recovery options and disposal options for social, environmental and financial benefit
* Procure new waste management services where necessary
* Build strong working relationships with waste management contract managers to ensure that the contract requirements are fully delivered and problems are resolved rapidly
* Identify suitable suppliers for appropriate waste receptacles and site infrastructure

Implement Change

* Develop new waste management strategy, policy, plan and relevant procedures
* Implement waste management plan to achieve legal compliance, and social, environmental and financial benefit
* Communicate change effectively throughout the organisation

Compliance

* Gather data from across the network to establish baseline waste quantity, type and cost
* Undertake site compliance visits to ensure that waste management procedures are being implemented correctly across the organisation

Training and Education

* Liaise with internal staff including senior managers and directors
* Provide waste management  training to staff at all levels
* Produce educational resources and collaterals for staff and passengers

Other

* Support Environmental Manager with the delivery of key environmental commitments
* Support Environmental Manager in the design of a Marine Litter Campaign aligned with Scottish Government targets
* Any additional duties as required

Desirable Qualifications

* Degree/HND in a subject such as environmental science / management, waste management  / sustainable resource management, earth science, biosciences, applied science, or engineering

* Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) Membership

Skills

* Strong written/verbal communication skills and a persuasive and influential communicator
* Demonstrate excellent time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
* A strong working knowledge of all waste legislation and its impact on the business

Experience

* Extensive experience in the management of multiple complex contracts
* Extensive experience working in a related management position preferably in the marine or oil & gas industry and in particular working with Environmental standards such as  ISO 14001, ISO 50001
* Experience in participating in the development of environmental strategy and initiatives and driving cultural change in relation to the environment, including risk management and can demonstrate a successful outcome
* Experience of working with reporting and analysis software
* Experience of implementing and auditing environmental standards

The successful applicant must be able to commute to Gourock on a daily basis
