THE PORT OF GOTHENBURG has received an international award for its contribution to cleaner shipping.

The award, the Sustainable Shipping Award, was presented in London on July 7.

The Port of Gothenburg, together with shipping lines and environmental organisations, has produced a programme where vessels that contribute to cleaner oceans and cleaner air are rewarded. Vessels, for example, that operate using cleaner fuel whilst in the port are compensated for their increased fuel costs. The programme also rewards vessels classified as “green vessels” according to the Clean Shipping Index.

"The main reason why we received the award is our innovative way of working, where we set up the programme in collaboration with our customers and environmental organisations," says the port's Environmental Manager Åsa Wilske, who travelled to London to attend the awards ceremony.

The Port of Gothenburg aims to support shipping companies and operators that contribute to cleaner air quality in Gothenburg by reducing their emissions of sulphur oxides and particles. As a shipping company/operator you can be reimbursed for the extra fuel costs you incur by investing in fuel that is cleaner than what is prescribed in law. To qualify, the fuel used within the Gothenburg traffic area must contain a maximum of 0.1% sulphur in main and auxiliary engines as well as boilers. LNG or equivalent clean fuels also qualify for support within the programme.

The Port of Gothenburg will reimburse up to SEK 250,000 during 2011 for extra fuel costs within the Gothenburg traffic area.

The Port of Gothenburg will also repay a certain proportion of the port charge to the 20 first vessels that have a “good environmental performance” (according to the Clean Shipping Index) that put into the Port of Gothenburg during 2011. The port will pay up to SEK 30,000 as a subsidy for each vessel that puts into the Port of Gothenburg during 2011.

Other nominees for the award were Portland Ferries and VOF Amulet.
